Manchester United's chances of snapping up Benfica hotshot Darwin Nunez have suffered a major setback, as Liverpool are winning the race to sign the in-demand Uruguay striker.

Mirror Football understands that while Nunez is hesitant over the idea of joining the Erik ten Hag's revolution, Jurgen Klopp and co have made an offer for the 22-year-old and are immersed in talks with the Portuguese giants.

The Red Devils' attention is now likely to shift back to midfield, their priority area to recruit for this summer. Ten Hag is still keen on signing Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong, while it's been reported that PSV Eindhoven ace Ibrahim Sangare has his heart set on a move to the Premier League amid links to United.

Keep it right here for Thursday's latest news from Old Trafford.

United 'confident' over new Garnacho deal

Manchester United fans can somewhat allay their fears that Juventus will snap up Alejandro Garnacho at the end of his contract, as it's been reported that talks over a new deal are progressing well.

The Red Devils want to secure the under-18 Player of the Year on fresh terms, even though the Manchester Evening News state Garnacho is already tied down until June 2025, contradicting previous reports that his current contract was up in 12 months' time.

It'd been claimed that Juventus were plotting a Paul Pogba-esque transfer swoop for the winger, but their chances of success have suffered a blow.

United told where transfer focus should be

Erik Ten Hag must ignore star names and sign humble players with the right attitude to take Manchester United back to the top, according to Quinton Fortune.

Fortune won the Premier League with United in 2003 as part of a team that included legends Roy Keane, David Beckham, Paul Scholes, Rio Ferdinand, Ryan Giggs, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The former South Africa international, who spent seven years at Old Trafford believes signing players with the character embodied by those legends is just as important as ability, as ten Hag looks to lift United following their worst season of the Premier League era.

United finished in sixth place, 35 points behind champions Manchester City, their points haul of 58 their lowest total since the Premier League was formed three decades ago, as well as ending up with a goal difference of zero. When asked about the type of player United should target, Fortune said: "I've thought about that and it's a good question.

United 'lead' Torres race

Manchester United have been described as the favourites to sign Villarreal defender Pau Trorres.

Tottenham Hotspur are also interested in securing the 25-year-old centre-back's signature this summer, but Spanish outlet La Razon, via Sport Witness, claim that Erik ten Hag and co currently lead the race.

The Red Devils are 'willing' to table a €50 million (£42.7m) bid, while Spurs are prepared to offer former Villarreal loanee Giovani Lo Celso as part of a player-plus-cash deal.

De Jong deal could harm City

Bernardo Silva might finally get the chance to land his dream transfer to Barcelona this summer if Frenkie de Jong makes his way to Manchester United.

The Red Devils have made the Dutchman a top target this year as Erik ten Hag eyes a reunion with the player he moulded at Ajax. While on the face of it, that would be an audacious move - the fact that Barca need to start selling some top players to balance their books means that an exit is viable.

Midfield is an area where United are in dire need of reinforcements after losing Nemanja Matic and Paul Pogba on free transfers. The Barca star has been eyed as one of the main targets and that could have a knock-on effect up the road.

More here.

Arsenal 'offered' Akanji

Arsenal have reportedly been offered the chance to sign Manchester United transfer target Manuel Akanji - but the Gunners are set to pass on a deal for the Swiss defender.

Arsenal and United are both expected to be busy in the transfer market this summer after they missed out on qualifying for next year's Champions League. The Gunners saw a top-four finish slip away in the final weeks of the campaign and are looking to go one better next year, while United will be hoping their new manager, Erik ten Hag, can help them recover from an awful season.

It's common knowledge that Gunners chief Mikel Arteta is in the market for a new No.9and midfield reinforcements this summer and a host of names, such as Gabriel Jesus, Gianluca Scamacca, Youri Tielemans and Arthur Melo, have already been linked with the Londoners.

Nunez fiasco shows United's issues

Manchester United like to boast they are the biggest club in the world.

As big as God, according to new chief executive Richard Arnold, who once told a summit he addressed in 2016 that the “level we are engaging at, to put it in context, is akin to religion.”

It’s about time they started doing what it says on the tin.

If United just step aside to allow Liverpool to snatch Benfica striker Darwin Nunez from under their noses then the bright new future promised by Arnold when he took over from Ed Woodward earlier this year will already be a pipedream.

United join Gvardiol race

One alternative as a left-sided centre-back being suggested is RB Leipzig’s Josko Gvardiol. The defender has impressed in the Bundesliga this season and has emerged as a United transfer target.

The Telegraph report that the Red Devils have joined the race to sign the Croatian, with Chelsea and Spurs also keen. Gvardiol shone in his first season in the Bundesliga, both domestically and in cup competitions – helping Leipzig to the Europa League semi-finals and their first DFP-Pokal.

United also remain interested in Jurrien Timber of Ajax, with Ten Hag keen to reunite with the defender.

Bastoni staying put

Erik Ten Hag is keen to strengthen his defence this summer, but it appears that he will have to change his transfer plans already. The Dutchman was reportedly keen on Italy defender Alessandro Bastoni, but the central defender will remain at Inter Milan.

The 23-year-old has been linked with both United and Spurs, but both sides will now have to look elsewhere as the player is happy at the Serie A side. Bastoni’s agent, Tullio Tinti, told reporters: “Bastoni will certainly remain at Inter. He has a contract with Inter, he is happy to play at Inter and there's no problem.”

There has been speculation that Bastoni may instead commit his future to Inter by signing a contract extension at the San Siro outfit. Speaking of a new deal, Tinti said: “I respect contracts. If they call me, there’s no problem.”

Liverpool make Nunez offer

Liverpool are set to steal the initiative in the race to secure the signature of sought after star Darwin Nunez. The Benfica striker is hot property this summer, with numerous clubs linked with the Uruguay international.

United are amongst those interested, but Premier League rivals Liverpool appear to be at the front of the queue to sign the 22-year-old. It has been revealed that the Reds have sent an official bid of £68million for Nunez that could rise up to £85m, a figure that is reportedly in the region of what Benfica would accept.

ESPN has also report that Spanish clubs are monitoring the situation. The Red Devils are thought to be in contact with Nunez’s agent, but whether they have missed their opening remains to be seen.

Expect more updates on the likes of Frenkie de Jong, Jurrien Timber and many other reported targets.

See you then!

Dybala hopes fading

Manchester United are believed to have balked at Paulo Dybala's salary demands when they were offered the chance to sign the Argentine playmaker.

But those same demands have not put off Inter Milan, who are closing in on signing the the Premier Leauge-linked 28-year-old, according to widespread reports.

Dybala will leave Juventus at the end of the month after seven brilliant years in Turin.

De Jong deal moving forward

Manchester United are reportedly making progress in their pursuit of Frenkie de Jong.

The Barcelona and Netherlands midfielder is keen to stay put in Catalonia and Paris Saint-Germain are also vying to sign him this summer.

But Gerard Romero claims talks between United and Barca are moving forward as Erik ten Hag eyes a reunion with his former Ajax player.

PSG rival Man Utd for De Jong

Paris Saint-Germain are rivalling Manchester United to sign Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona this summer, according to ESPN.

Sangare has heart set on Premier League move

Ibrahim Sangare is desperate to join a Premier League club this summer, with Manchester United and Chelsea interested in his services, according to Sky Sports.

The PSV midfielder, 24, has emerged as a target for the Red Devils as Erik ten Hag aims to replace the likes of Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic, Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata.

Sangare is believed to have a £30million release clause and the report claims he would leap at the chance to play his football in England.

Ten Hag earmarks role for Rashford

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag appears to have already made a decision on Marcus Rashford’s future role with the Red Devils’ transfer priority having now emerged.

United are expected to pool their resources into welcoming a new midfielder to the club - the likes of Ruben Neves and Youri Tielemans having already been linked.

This could well provide a clue into Rashford’s future role in Ten Hag’s plans. As it stands, the England man represents just one of a few options capable of playing centrally in attack and the Manchester Evening News reports he could be trialled in that role.

Man Utd transfer priority speaks volumes about Erik ten Hag’s view on Marcus Rashford

Bastoni commits future to Inter

Inter Milan have successfully kept hold of Alessandro Bastoni in news which comes as a significant blow to Manchester United just hours before the summer transfer window opens.

The Premier League club were linked with the Italy international as they aim to address deficiencies at the heart of their respective defences. Bastoni, 23, won the Coppa Italia with Inter this season and Serie A the previous campaign, while he was also part of the Azzurri squad which triumphed at Euro 2020 last summer.

He extended his contract at San Siro last year and has two seasons remaining on his deal in Lombardy. Bastoni's agent, Tullio Tinti, met with Inter chiefs on Wednesday afternoon and declared his client "will definitely stay" with the club as he emerged from the talks.

Juventus targeting Garnacho

Italian outlet Calciomercato, via Sport Witness, reports that Juventus are plotting to sign Alejandro Garnacho.

The Argentina youth international is out of contract at Mancehster United in June 2023 - a mere 12 months from now - and the Serie A side, along with their rivals, are admirers of his supreme talents.

The Mail reported last month that the starlet was in line for a bumper new deal after his exploits in the academy, but silence has followed.

Nunez latest

In a further blow for Manchester United, Liverpool appear to have snatched pole position in the race for Darwin Nunez.

The Reds are believed to be preparing an opening verbal offer of £68million plus add-ons to sign the Benfica striker, who wants to play Champions League football next season.

There are also widespread reports claiming Jurgen Klopp and Co. are close to agreeing personal terms with Nunez.

Bastoni staying at Inter

Alessandro Bastoni will be staying at Inter Milan this summer despite his links with Manchester United and other clubs across Europe.

His agent, who met with Inter officials on Wednesday, said, per Fabrizio Romano: "Bastoni will stay at Inter for sure. He has a contract and he's happy with Inter - there’s no problem."

It looks like it's back to the drawing board for Red Devils chiefs as they search for a new centre-back.

Inter 'currently meeting' with Dybala's agent

Manchester United-linked Paulo Dybala is edging closer to joining Inter Milan.

It's being reported in Italy that Jorge Antun, the man who represents the former Juventus star, is currently in Milan negotiating a move.

United, alongside Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur, had been tagged as interested in Dybala, but the 28-year-old forward's future looks to be with the Nerazzurri.

Dembele 'chooses' next club

It could finally be the end of Ousmane Dembele's long-running links of a move Manchester United.

Le10 Sport report that the 25-year-old Frenchman has decided to leave Barcelona and while Paris Saint-Germain were backed to secure his signature this summer, Dembele has chosen to reuinite with former Borussia Dortmund boss at Chelsea.

Dembele's Barcelona contract expires at the end of this month and for years the injury-prone winger has been tipped to join United, but finally, the end appears to be nigh.

Mourinho to PSG links dismissed

It doesn't look like former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho will be heading to Paris Saint-Germain.

Reports claim that Nice boss Christophe Galtier is top of the French champions' list to replace Mauricio Pochettino after his impending sacking is confirmed, while Mourinho will be staying put at Roma.

That could boost the Red Devils' chances of offloading defenders Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Eric Bailly, who've both been linked with summer moves to the Italian capital.

Meanwhile, now ex-United midfielder Nemanja Matic is on his way to play under Mourinho at their third club together.

United 'won't be held ransom' for De Jong

While Manchester United would very much like to add Frenkie de Jong to Erik ten Hag's new-look squad this summer, BBC Sport report that the Red Devils aren't prepared to be held ransom.

United are cautious amid speculation that Barcelona are willing to sell the 25-year-old former Ajax star for a similair price to what they paid for him in 2019, £64 million.

De Jong is Ten Hag's top target this summer but the Dutch midfielder is also reluctant to leave the Camp Nou, adding to fears that a deal won't be done unless Barca receive enough cash to force a move.

United can take De Ligt advantage over Juventus

Man United could potentially look to take advantage of Juventus’ hesitancy over Matthijs de Ligt's new contract with a move for the Dutch defender.

New Red Devils’ boss Erik ten Hag is keen to add to his centre-back options ahead of his first season in charge at Old Trafford, with United having struggled from a defensive perspective next season. Meanwhile, the Dutchman is set to make a few sacrifices regarding his squad.

Eric Bailly, Axel Tuanzebe and Aaron Wan-Bissaka are among the players likely to be sold, leaving the club low on defenders heading into the 2022/23 campaign. A number of options have of course already been mentioned as potential new signings ahead of the summer transfer window, with Ajax starlet Jurrien Timber having emerged as a priority target.

EXCLUSIVE: Nunez hesitant to join United

Yet more news on this man, and we've got an exclusive update.

Darwin Nunez is hesitant to join Manchester United this summer as they are not in the Champions League next season and is currently weighing up his other options.

United and Liverpool are both keen to seal a deal for Benfica’s 22-year-old Uruguayan forward, who smashed 32 goals this term. His heroics included six goals in the Champions League - including in both legs of their quarter-final tie with Liverpool - and the ace wants to play in the competition again next term.

He has changed agents this summer from his Uruguayan representative Edgardo Lasalvia to link up with superagent Jorge Mendes who is lining up a blockbuster switch.

United echo Liverpool's Nunez stance

Manchester United are reportedly reluctant to get drawn into a bidding war over Benfica striker Darwin Nunez - just like Liverpool.

Both Premier League clubs are interested in the 22-year-old Uruguayan, who is valued at £85 million by his current employers.

But it's been claimed by the Manchester Evening News that United are prioriting midfield this summer, while Liveprool seek to replace want-away Sadio Mane.

Nunez has been identified as the right kind of fit at Anfield, while Erik ten Hag is focussing on other areas.

Juventus want 'Pogba-like' Garnacho move

Juventus are reportedly interested in signing Manchester United starlet Alejandro Garnacho.

According to Calciomercato, via Sport Witness, the Bianconeri want to repeat their trick of poaching Paul Pogba from the Red Devils at the end of his contract in 2012, with Garnacho's deal expiring next summer.

The 17-year-old made two appearances for United's first team last season, having contributed to 10 goals in seven games to help the club's under-18 side win the FA Youth Cup in May.

De Jong told United move a "no brainer"

Former Ajax and Netherlands midfielder Marciano Vink believes Manchester United would be the perfect destination for Frenkie de Jong this summer.

The 25-year-old has been linked with a move away from Barcelona with Erik ten Hag keen to bring the Dutch midfielder to Old Trafford in the transfer window. The pair worked together at Ajax and helped the club reach the Champions League semi-final during the 2018/19 season.

It is thought Ten Hag is hoping to convince De Jong to join United and has assured him he will be a key player in their rebuild despite no Champions League football for the Red Devils next term. They finished sixth in the Premier League, 11 points behind fourth-place Tottenham Hotspur and will participate in the Europa League instead.

United and Chelsea battle for Sangare

Manchester United and Chelsea look set for a transfer battle to sign highly-rated PSV Eindhoven midfielder Ibrahim Sangare.

The 24-year-old has his heart set on a move to the Premier League this summer, according to Sky Sports.

Sangare's PSV contract runs until 2025 and believed to have a release clause worth £29.8 million.

Newcastle and Liverpool have also been linked with interest in the Ivorian, who joined the Dutch giants from Toulouse in 2020.

Van Gaal warns Timber

Louis van Gaal has told Jurrien Timber that joining Manchester United in a World Cup year may not be the wisest decision.

New Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag is busily working behind the scenes to seal his first signing since replacing Ralf Rangnick at the end of last month. And the Dutchman has plenty to do, inheriting a United squad coming off the back of their worst ever Premier League season.

During his first few weeks in the post Ten Hag is running the rule over his playing staff before deciding which changes he needs to swiftly implement to reverse their fortunes. His first window is expected to be a busy one, with upgrades anticipated right through the spine of the team.

Bastoni breaks silence on United links

Inter Milan defender Alessandro Bastoni has claimed that he has not been made aware of any interest in him as Tottenham Hotspur and Man United aim to seal a deal for his services.

The two Premier League clubs have been linked with a move for the Italian, the pair keen to bolster their defensive options ahead of the new season. Spurs boss Antonio Conte has worked with the centre-back in the past and is anxious to be reunited with his former player in north London.

Elsewhere, new Red Devils head coach Erik ten Hag has recently been linked with a swoop for Bastoni as United aim to improve the defence that saw them hugely struggle under Ralf Rangnick last term.

Nunez price named

Liverpool have been told it will take £85m to sign Darwin Nunez.

And now they have a huge dilemma as they ponder a serious move for the striker who has emerged as their top target this summer.

The Reds have been adamant they will not overpay for the Benfica striker, and have other irons in the fire as they look to a future without Sadio Mane.

Liverpool have indicated they will not get into a bidding war with Manchester United over the services of the Uruguay international.

But Benfica are adamant they will not lower the price, and after enquiries from Liverpool, United and Atletico Madrid, they have named their price for a player who scored 36 goals this season.

Dumfries eyed

Whilst United harbour ambitions of securing a deal for De Jong this summer, it appears that they also have their eyes on one of his international teammates - Inter Milan’s Denzel Dumfries.

Ten Hag has already made the decision to refresh the right-back position at Old Trafford ahead of next season, with £50million signing Aaron Wan-Bissaka set to leave the club. His replacement has also already seemingly been found.

It is suggested in the print edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport, via Sempre Inter, that the Red Devils are interested in Dumfries and lead a host of clubs attempting to sign him. A price tag of €30million (£25.4m) has reportedly been put on him ahead of the window.

De Jong bid disputed

Another prominent player that has been rumoured to be on Ten Hag’s shortlist this summer is Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong. It has been suggested that the Red Devils have agreed a deal to sign the Dutchman as their first summer signing.

However, that does not now appear to be the case. As per Spanish outlet Sport, the Catalan giants are yet to receive a formal offer from Old Trafford chiefs for the former Ajax star.

It is further suggested that Barcelona are still open to letting De Jong go this summer with a fee in the region of €80million (£68.3m) enough for a deal to be completed.

Nunez 'intrigued' by United move

One of the names that continues to be linked with a switch to United this summer is Benfica hotshot Darwin Nunez. The Uruguayan has been backed as a replacement for compatriot Edinson Cavani, who will leave at the expiry of his contract this summer

However, there is set to be an intense race for Nunez's services heading into the window with it being reported that fierce rivals Liverpool are also interested in a move as Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane face uncertain futures.

It appears that the striker could be leaning towards a switch to Old Trafford though. According to The i, Nunez is privately ‘intrigued’ at the prospect of joining Ten Hag and United - something that the Red Devils will surely be aiming to take advantage of as they attempt to agree a deal for his services.

That being said, a different report in the Daily Telegraph claims the player is 'determined' to join a club where he can play Champions League football, so the news may not be all good for United.

Good morning

Hello and welcome to today's live Manchester United transfer blog.

We've got plenty of stories doing the rounds today, so let's not waste any time.

Goodnight!

Thanks for joining us for Tuesday's Manchester United news!

We'll be back on Wednesday morning with more transfer gossip.

See you then!

Maguire absolved of blame

Michael Owen believes Harry Maguire was not at fault for Germany's goal during their 1-1 Nations League draw against England on Tuesday evening.

England supporters have pointed the blame at Maguire for being out of position. They've also criticised goalkeeper Jordan Pickford for his poor attempt at saving Hoffman's shot. Yet Owen believes the Manchester United skipper was not to blame for the error.

Former England international Owen has instead placed the blame on Declan Rice's shoulders. The former Ballon d'Or winner believes Rice was out of position, forcing Maguire to step forward and leave a huge hole in defence for Hofmann to take advantage of.

"I felt as though it was Declan Rice, he vacates his area and breaks the line," Owen told Channel 4. "I think he is in a good initial position when [Kai] Havertz comes into that area. But he [Rice] runs past Havertz and into an area, no mans land.

"He doesn’t even press the ball - and then that gives a problem to Harry Maguire. Does he now come out of that line and make a three? And he does, and there’s no pressure on the ball. Then all of a sudden there is a big gap."

Woodward exit can "make difference" - Van Gaal

Former Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has claimed Ed Woodward 's exit from Old Trafford could "make the difference" for Erik ten Hag with the Red Devils.

The former Ajax boss has been confirmed as the club’s new manager following a disastrous period under interim manager Ralf Rangnick. He joins during a period of change at Old Trafford.

Overhaul is certainly not limited to the dugout this summer, with outgoing vice-chairman Woodward set to be replaced by Richard Arnold. The Red Devils will certainly hope all of those alterations bear fruit for the club having endured their worst Premier League season from a points perspective last term.

Van Gaal has suggested that Woodward’s departure could potentially be a huge benefit for Ten Hag as he prepares for his first season in charge since joining. Speaking at a press conference ahead of the Dutch national side’s UEFA Nations League clash with Wales on Wednesday evening, he said: “There is now a new leadership.

“It was Woodward now it's Richard Arnold, and that can make the difference so we have to wait and see. He [Ten Hag] has a lot of confidence, so who am I to say something about that?"

Tielemans' admission

Youri Tielemans has suggested that he will only quit Leicester for a "great project" amid interest from Manchester United and Arsenal.

The Belgian playmaker has been linked with a move away from the King Power Stadium this summer with his contract set to expire in just 12 months’ time.

The Red Devils have been rumoured to be considering a move following the exits of Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic.

Speaking ahead of Belgium’s UEFA Nations League clash with Poland on Wednesday, he said: "That [a move] is not out of the question. But I can also stay.

"I feel very good at Leicester, I was welcomed with open arms from day one. I give everything for the club until the last day.

"But of course you have to listen to other opportunities, you have to look at your career, and sometimes you have to make choices. Maybe one will come my way."

Ten Hag handed transfer boost

Feyenoord are reportedly ready to consider offers for highly-rated left-back Tyrell Malacia with Erik ten Hag hoping to make him his first signing as manager of Manchester United.

The new Red Devils boss is eager to kickstart his Old Trafford reign with a strong summer transfer window, and while the likes of Frenkie de Jong and Jurrien Timber have been heavily linked, Malacia is looking a much more likely option.

According to Dutch outlet Voetbal International, French giants Lyon have had two bids rejected by Feyenoord for their 22-year-old starlet.

However, it is stated that the Eredivisie side are prepared to facilitate a transfer and help Malacia reach the next step of his promising career, which chiefs at De Kuip believe the Dutch defender is ready for.

Already a fully-fledged Netherlands international with three caps to his name, Mirror Football exclusively reported back in April that Ten Hag wanted to sign Malacia and the chances of a deal happening have now been majorly boosted.

Alaba defends Rangnick

David Alaba has praised Ralf Rangnick's immediate impact with Austria and believes he was not afforded the time to prove a success with Manchester United.

Alaba told The Athletic: "He has been really good, you can see we have a really good plan and you can see it works for us on the pitch. He doesn’t want us to let the opponents breathe air. It is good for us."

He added: "I have known Ralf since I was 18 years old and he is a world-class coach. What he did in the past is something special and now I am seeing it close up.

"He showed what he can do at Leipzig, Salzburg and Hoffenheim. He didn’t have a lot of time in Manchester. He has a really good plan and knows a lot about football."

Man Utd's Nunez blow

If Darwin Nunez has a straight shootout between Liverpool and Manchester United, it’ll be a no-brainer for the Uruguayan.

That’s the verdict of former Anfield star Stan Collymore, who reckons the Nunez’s signing would be the perfect shot across the bows of his old club’s rivals.

Mirror Sport columnist Collymore said: “Darwin Nunez scores goals and creates bother for defenders, so I’m very excited that Liverpool are in for him as well as Manchester United.

"Liverpool have to make the odd marquee signing as well to fire shots across the bows of the other big clubs in the Premier League, and signing Nunez for £68m would be one of those."

Asensio's summer options

Marco Asensio has been discussing his Real Madrid future as he prepares to enter the final year of his contract.

The Spain international, 26, has been linked with Premier League giants Manchester United, Arsenal and Tottenham in recent weeks, as well as Serie A champions AC Milan. He's been a key member of Real's squad since the summer of 2016, playing 235 games.

Asensio has helped Los Blancos lift three La Liga titles, three Champions Leagues and various other trophies. He's won 26 senior caps and represented Spain at the World Cup in 2018. The playmaker previously played for Mallorca and Espanyol.

As quoted by Spanish outlet Marca, Asensio insists he has three options: signing a new contract at the Santiago Bernabeu, leaving the club this summer or completing the final year of his deal ahead of a free transfer in 12 months' time. He is yet to decide which option to take.

Van Persie explains Man Utd rejection

Robin van Persie has told Erik ten Hag he will not find a better club to manage than Manchester United, reports David McDonnell.

Ten Hag wanted former United striker van Persie to be his assistant, but the 38-year-old turned down the chance to return to Old Trafford. Before ten Hag turned to Mitchell van der Gaag and Steve McClaren, both now part of his United coaching staff, van Persie was his first choice.

But Van Persie decided to stay in his role as coach to the first-team and youth set-up at Feyenoord, where his 15-year-old son Shaqueel plays. Although the chance to return to Old Trafford came too soon for van Persie, he told Dutch compatriot ten Hag he made the right choice in taking over at United.

Man Utd miss out on Tchouameni

Manchester United have missed out on signing Aurelien Tchouameni after Real Madrid agreed a fee with Monaco worth £80 million, according to multiple reports.

The 22-year-old had agreed personal terms with the Reds but Los Blancos have gazumped Jurgen Klopp and co, who were always wary of Tchouameni's preference of a move to Santiago Bernabeu. The Athletic claim that Real have stumped up a total package of €100m and verbally agreed terms for the French sensation, who will leave Monaco after two-and-a-half star-making seasons.

Paris Saint-Germain, Liverpool and Chelsea were also linked with Tchouameni, who has established himself as one of Europe's most exciting centre midfielders since breaking through at Bordeaux as a teenager.

Pogba's Man Utd exit

Paul Pogba has said he "wants to feel loved" as he closes in on finding a new club after his Manchester United exit.

The Frenchman was confirmed to be departing Old Trafford last week, with the Red Devils set to lose his services on a free transfer after a club record move back in 2016.

It is the second time that Man United have been forced to let Pogba depart for nothing having also let him go at the end of his deal back in 2012.

Ferguson's hairdryer treatment

Sir Alex Ferguson did not hold back when it came to disciplining players at Manchester United.

The former Scotland coach managed the Reds side for 27 years, becoming an important face in and around Old Trafford. Somebody who is too familiar with that is former United defender Mikael Silvestre. The Frenchman represented United between 1999 and 2008, making over 360 appearances for the Reds.

Speaking on the UTD Podcast, the now 44-year-old reminisced about a time when the United boss gave him the complete "hairdryer twice".

Ferguson did not hold back in delivering an angry verbal reprimand to Silvestre after the his own post-match interviews in French were being picked up by the media.

Maguire's glowing review

Manchester United captain Harry Maguire has long faced question marks over why he can't seem to recreate the form he enjoys for his country when playing for his club.

Maguire's performances for the Red Devils last season left plenty to be desired and while he was not the only United player guilty of an underwhelming campaign, he seemed to take the brunt of the criticism. That is likely to be down to the fact that it is Maguire who dons the armband.

For the Three Lions, he doesn't have to carry that burden as Tottenham talisman Harry Kane enjoys the status of England captain. Deployed as part of a back-three, Maguire is far less likely to make a costly error playing alongside the likes of John Stones and Kyle Walker.

As the England stars conduct media duties ahead of their next Nations League fixture against Germany, Stones has leapt to the defence of Maguire after intense criticism last season.

Bowen raises eyebrows with Beckham comments

Manchester United fans may have been intrigued to read Jarrod Bowen's post-match remarks after his England debut against Hungary.

The West Ham talisman admitted he was a United - and a David Beckham fan growing up and therefore wanted to wear the number seven shirt for the Three Lions.

"I followed Manchester United a bit growing up, as well, but I think I more followed him because I thought he was cool. Him growing up, me supporting Manchester United, trying to copy him with that picture and, as soon as I got sent it, I knew it was going out."

Newcastle have reportedly withdrawn from the race to sign United shot-stopper Dean Henderson this summer.

United skipper Maguire defended by England teammate

John Stones has leapt to the defence of under-fire United captain Harry Maguire.

"I think some of the criticism that I’ve seen personally and over this season has been harsh," Stones said.

"I don’t want to get into that but I think how he’s conducted himself on and off the pitch, he should be extremely proud of that and, all I can say is, I enjoy playing with Harry and I hope that we can do for many more years to come."

Darwin Nunez urged to pick Liverpool over Man Utd

If Liverpool and Manchester United are going head-to-head to sign Darwin Nunez this summer, the Uruguayan should decide to pick Anfield over Old Trafford.

That's according to former England right-back Glen Johnson, who believes it would make sense for Nunez to join Jurgen Klopp's side ahead of United as they eye more trophies next season. The Reds lifted the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup last campaign but missed out on the Premier League and Champions League titles in the final month.

De Ligt responds

Juventus defender and Manchester United target Matthijs de Ligt has responded to reports linking him with a move to Old Trafford this summer, in which a deal would see him reunite with former Ajax manager Erik ten Hag.

De Ligt was asked whether he could leave Juventus this weekend, whilst on international duty with the Netherlands, and the Dutchman has also responded to a question about a move to United by admitting that he looks at the 'sporting project' of clubs. Speaking to NOS, via the Manchester Evening News, he said: “There are ongoing conversations between me and Juventus.

“Right now I am focused on how I perform on the pitch, once the right moment arrives I will decide to extend or to look further. I look at the sporting project. Ending fourth in a row for two years in a row is not good enough, Juventus knows this too. So being Juventus, we have to make steps. I’m a Juventus player so I’m focused on that."

Good morning and welcome to another day of live Manchester United transfer coverage.

Let's start with the man of the moment, Darwin Nunez. A fresh report in Portugal claims Anthony Martial has been offered in part-exchange for the Uruguay striker after Benfica turned down the opportunity to sign Andreas Pereira in a big-money deal.
